SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) – It has been about one year since a 23-year-old Summerville man was shot in the head while driving home.
Though the family of Hunter Keith Baum still waits for answers, they say that’s not why they remember him.
“I miss my boy every minute of every day, but I know he’s in a better place. He’s in heaven,” mother Meredith Baum-Kenyon said.
She said the 23-year-old should have never even made it to the hospital considering the injuries he endured on Aug. 15, 2023.
But after Hunter was admitted to MUSC, his mother said he fought for five days until he couldn’t fight anymore.
“He was so determined that nothing was going to beat him,” she said.
His family and community describe Hunter as a “hero.” He was registered as an organ doner when he died, gifting organs to seven recipients.
One of those recipients is 15-year-old Connor, who is the reason his heart continues beating.
“And he will live on through all of his organ recipients,” Baum-Kenyon said.
Hunter’s loved ones said they hope it’s how Hunter lived his life will be remembered, not how he lost it.
“The evil didn’t win, Hunter did because he got to go to heaven,” Baum-Kenyon said.
The family asks the community to continue to say his name, but to ultimately turn to God as they still search for answers.
