Every family experiences loss differently.

Our Aftercare team is poised to meet families where they are at in their grief and support you every step of the way. There are many ways that you can honor your courageous donor on a timeline that feels right for you and your family.

Share: There are many ways that you can honor your donor by sharing their story. One way is to share your loved one’s story and photo on our website and social platforms. Your loved one’s story can inspire and bring hope to others, and we encourage you to share your journey and experiences with our community.

Write: Correspondence between donor families and recipients is one of the many ways families can find hope and healing through their grief journey. Families may choose to send a letter or card to their loved one’s recipients. Our Donor Family Services (DFS) team facilitates correspondence and is here to support you throughout the process.

Connect: We believe that connections and community involvement are a powerful way to continue the legacy of a loved one. SHSC honors heroic donors in a variety of ways through the year. Stay up to date about upcoming events and opportunities to honor your loved one.

Volunteer: Donor families are invited to join our volunteer program, Heroes for Hope. This program is comprised of passionate individuals dedicated to sharing the mission of organ, eye and tissue donation with the people of South Carolina and beyond.

Coping with Grief Milestones

After losing a loved one, each day can feel like a reminder that you are one day further away from them. Significant dates, such as their birthday, the anniversary of their death or holidays can unexpectedly stir up waves of grief.
