Joel Silverwatch
Donor Hero
“Joel was a devoted husband, father, loving son and well-respected architect. He passed away unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack. Still, his life continues to impact so many people after his passing through the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation,” shared donor wife, Lori.
“Joel lived his life to the fullest and enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, basketball, tennis, pickleball, playing poker and creating music with his many guitars and upright string bass. He was well-known for his boisterous laugh, positivity, kind heart, creativity and devotion to his family. As an architect, Joel worked on numerous residential and commercial projects in the New England area, which will continue to display his architectural talent for generations to come.
My son, Sammy, and I had the honor of visiting the We Are Sharing Hope SC headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. Their office is built on a grid of pilotis donor walls inscribed with the names of donor heroes, which create the foundation for the building. On one of these walls, my husband’s name is engraved. As an architect himself, Joel often joked that he wanted his ashes buried in the foundation of his last project. While this isn’t exactly that, I believe Joel would approve of the space where his name is permanently displayed, honoring him for his gift of life.
Joel saved and enhanced many lives through the donation of his kidneys, liver and corneas. His tissue donations have been used in many neurological, spinal and dental surgeries. I know that his strength and compassion will continue to live on through these individuals who have benefited from his selfless decision.”
