Nick Simpson
Donor Hero
“On March 23rd, 2024, our beautiful 21-year-old son, Nicholas, took his last breath on this earth, but he selflessly provided a second chance at life to two individuals by gifting his kidneys through organ donation,” shared Donna, donor mom to donor hero Nicholas.
“If anyone ever met Nick, they would instantly fall in love with his contagious smile and witty humor. He always lived his life to the fullest, loving people and caring for them whenever possible. On March 26th, 2024, Nick was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. The next few days in the hospital were the most difficult days our family had ever experienced, full of prayers, tears and holding Nick’s hand continuously. We desperately wanted our son to be able to come home, but God had other plans. We were asked if Nick wanted to be an organ donor. I did not want to think about it because I knew that meant the hope of my son returning home alive was gone. How could I begin to make such a heartbreaking decision? This decision would signal the beginning of an unbearable and overwhelming life of grief without my son. For some reason, I reached into my purse for something and pulled out Nick’s wallet instead, which the police had brought to me when Nick was admitted to the hospital. I pulled out his driver’s license and held it up to the whole family with tears in my eyes. Nick had made the decision for us and was registered as an organ donor. That little red heart reminded me of Nick’s generosity and selflessness. Of course, he would want to help others.
We have not had the opportunity to meet Nick’s recipients, and we respect that they may never want to contact or meet us. Even still, a part of my son is living out there. I know the beautiful life that we had with Nick. He was the best son and brother to his sisters, a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephew, and a beloved grandson and friend to many. Someone else is getting a beautiful life because of Nick’s gift. Nick being an organ donor has given us some comfort, knowing that he is a hero. We will be proud of him and his decision forever.”
