“William was the third-born son in a family of five boys. The brothers were very close in age and were the best of friends. William was sometimes quiet but always very thoughtful, and when he did speak, he had something worth saying,” shared donor mom, Maura, about her son William.   

“William had many dear friends and was very well-liked. He was enthusiastic and always ready to help with anything. He was a hard worker and always wanted to do his best. He played many competitive sports, including baseball, soccer, basketball, cross country and track. During his senior year of high school, he was undefeated and the state champion in cross country. He majored in business administration at The Citadel and was an eleven-letter cross-country and track participant. After graduating from college, he worked in commercial real estate.   

Less than a week after his 24th birthday, William was the fatal victim of a hit-and-run while riding his bicycle. The accident was something we could never have been prepared for. Once we understood the severity of William’s injuries, there was no question about what we would do regarding donation. Through all our grief, there is some comfort in knowing that William helped others continue life. He was able to donate his organs, corneas, bones, tissue, skin and more to help others live and heal. Through our sadness, there is hope because of donation.    

As of 2024, it has been 16 years since William’s donation. His liver and left kidney/pancreas recipients are healthy and doing well. His lung recipient married in 2022 and welcomed a baby boy in 2024. His right kidney recipient lived 14 more years before losing his battle with cancer. William’s gift gave his heart recipient 15 extra years of life. Will’s corneas restored sight to two women, and he helped countless others through his tissue donation. He is forever a hero to us!”
