Living Kidney Donor

“I initially began the process of becoming a living donor after I saw that a girl I knew from high school had an older sister who needed a kidney transplant. Fortunately, her sister received her transplant before I completed the process, but I decided to continue the process as an anonymous donor. I stayed with MUSC even though I live in PA because the staff there was so wonderful and I had heard great feedback from other living donors.

My family was against me becoming a living donor, and I received a lot of criticism for my decision. My answer was always the same when I received push-back; more people need to be educated on the possibilities of living donation, and more people should have a ‘Share Your Spare’ mentality. I really wanted to be an example to my family and my son especially that we should love each other and help others, even those we’ve never met. We should never expect anything in return but give generously to others to spread kindness. I would describe the entire process of being a living donor as heartwarming. I have zero regrets and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Donation has not affected my day-to-day life, but I do try to make better choices for my health such as staying hydrated and watching my sodium and protein intake.

My message to someone considering becoming a living donor is to do your research and make sure you are aware of any possible outcomes or complications. Everyone’s experience is unique. Find a transplant center that you feel comfortable with and get feedback from others who have been through the donation process. Personally, I had a wonderful experience and felt confident, safe and comfortable throughout the entire process. I had a strong determination to help someone and change their life through living donation. I’m grateful that I did and wouldn’t change a single thing about my experience.”
